Light and Motion Industries Underwater Video Lenses

Full HD cameras demand the finest optics - the flaws of poor quality lenses will show up when watched on big HD TV screens or projected. Changes to the way land lenses see when taken under the water can compromise your underwater videography. To ensure users of Light and Motion Bluefin and Bluefin Pro video housings obtain the best quality footage, LMI have teamed up with Fathom Imaging. Fathom Imaging are a specialist manufacturer of lenses that have been specifically developed for use under the water. Fathom Imaging's specialised water contact optics are routinely used on top of the line broadcast systems costing tens of thousands of pounds.
Light and Motion offer a range of Fathom Imaging underwater video camera lenses to meet your exact requirements. You can shoot the smallest critters that we find on Ocean Optics/Atlantis Philippines safaris through to hulking shipwrecks like the Thistlegorm on our Black Rock Diving Dahab trips. Some of the Fathom Imaging lenses allow some or full zoom through, letting you switch from super wide- angle to a narrower angle. This flexibility is ideal for working with sharks (for example on African Spaces sardine run) as you can video the entire shark and its backdrop, then zoom in for a head shot without losing focus. Fathom Imaging lenses let you work with the Bluefins flip in 4 x close up lens. This is perfect for critter destinations like Dive Quests Raja Ampat trips because you can show the habitat in a wide shot, then progressively move in to film the smallest seahorse. As always, it's vital to think carefully about the subjects you will want to portray in your underwater videos and the likely filming conditions before selecting the right lens to match your needs.

Light and Motion Underwater Videos Lens Range
Flat Port
The optical glass flat port is the simplest port for Light and Motion underwater camera housings. The focal length of your camcorder lens will be increased by 1:33, causing subjects to appear 25% closer. This port isn't suitable for wide- angle photography of large subjects. It is useful for close up work and for general fish photography. It can be used with the Light and Motion Bluefins flip in filter or X4 close up lens. Minimum focusing distance and zoom range depend upon your camcorder. This port can be used in air and underwater.
Fathom Imaging 65 Wet Lens
This lens screws into the Light and Motion flat port. It can be fitted and removed under the water and stored on your Bluefin or Bluefin Pro housing until needed. It increases the underwater field of view of your camcorders lens to around 65 degrees or so. This is a semi - wide angle. You can use around half your zoom range. This lens is suited to filming subjects as large as medium sized sharks in good visibility.
Fathom Imaging WP90
This Fathom Imaging lens is a true wide - angle lens for general-purpose underwater video. Approaching a 90 degree angle of view under the water and useable in air, this is a very versatile lens. It's wide enough to film divers exploring, or shoot manta rays, the larger sharks including basking and whale sharks and the great whales. It is a must have in low visibility for anything but close ups. Because you have full zoom through, with the Fathom Imaging WP90 fitted to your Bluefin underwater housing, you can still tightly frame small reef fish. Flipping in the X4 close up lens brings super macro photography within your capabilities.
The capabilities of the Fathom Imaging WP90 mean that even for professional underwater videographers this is likely to be the only lens they ever need. It can handle almost every imaginable subject. With this lens you'll rarely if ever find you've missed that once in a lifetime sequence because you had the wrong lens on the camera and the right lens in your kitbag on the surface...
As always, Mark or Steve will be happy to guide you through the lens options to ensure you
have the right equipment for your shoot.
