Nexus Canon EOS 5D Housing
Canon's full frame EOS 5D is attracting considerable attention as acamera that can deliver outstanding image quality with an exceptional low light, low contrast capability. When combined with Canon's 15mm full frame fisheye lens, this becomes a formidable outfit for reef vistas, cavern and shipwreck photography.
The Nexus 5D housing has been created as a workhorse for the serious enthusiast or seasoned pro. Considerable care has been taken in thedesign of this housing to ensure fast operation of key shooting controls, so you don't miss never to be repeated photo opportunities. The standard of manufacturing is extremely high and the choice of premium materials will ensure the Nexus 5D Multifinder stands up to the toughest assignments.
The hull is cast aluminium, combining strength with lightness - two key qualities demanded by underwater photographers who will travel by air and then need to use equipment under the harshest conditions. The housing body weighs in at a fraction over 2kg. Nexus housings are, of course, anodised and painted to prevent any corrosion problems. The hull hugs the Canon EOS5D body, keeping the housing extremely compact. It takes up little space while travelling and creates minimal drag under water.
Toshi Kozawa's gift for designing housings that are intuitive to use shines through in the controls fitted to the Nexus 5D Multifinder. The shutter release is Toshi's soft touch lever designed to reduce vibration to an absolute minimum for the sharpest images at slow speeds or high magnification. The main dial on the top front of Canon cameras has often been a problem to access easily on other brands. This control is all-important, because it is used to adjust the aperture or shutter speed to create the lighting to make your image look the way you want it to. Many Canon housings require you to take your hand away from the firing position to operate this, slowing you down. Toshi has routed this control to an easily driven dial just below the shutter release, so it's easy to adjust even while shooting. The zoom control falls conveniently under control of your left hand. With some prime lenses, you can use manual focus with this control. It has a simple disengagement feature to protect your lenses when shooting in autofocus. AF lock/image enlargement sits under your right thumb. The main dial wheel is oversized for ease of use. Push buttons let you access LCD illuminator, invaluable on low light dives, Auto focus/ white balance, drive/ISO and metering mode/flash compensation. You can also turn your 5D on and off while it is in the housing. Mode control is provided. The Nexus 5D Multifinder housing lets you access menu, info, jump, playback and erase. Controls for monitor button, set, AE and FE lock are also included. Coplimented with more than twenty different controls, you can fully exploit the capabilities of your Canon EOS 5D under the water. Toshi seals each control with dual O rings.
The Nexus 5D Multifinder provides you with an extensive port system that encompasses specialist optics that run the range from split levels to supermacro. Included are 230mm/ 9 inch super domes, miniature domes, flat ports, extension rings and even wet close up lenses that can be removed and replaced underwater. When you select Nexus, you are investing in equipment that can capture virtually any subject you can imagine encountering.
Two Nikonos type sockets are installed as standard. Contacts are gold plated for reliable firing time after time. Nexus also fit drain holes to their sockets to help disperse water caught in the threads, a common problem with single O ring sealed strobe cables. This is a small but important touch, and helps avoid problems with your strobe system, the most vulnerable part of your underwater camera outfit. We can fit your choice of strobe arm fittings to the hand grips and a dedicated shoe is placed on the Nexus EOS5D front body for Nexus strobe arms for macro photography. Nexus also offer strobe mounting rings that encircle your macro ports for mounting small strobes. This can give you a very compact close up and macro outfit that's simple to shoot with, yet yields superb results. Ocean Optics recommends Inon Z - 240 strobes with this system for both wide angle and macro lighting. Professional clients who have selected Inon strobes include Martin Edge, Paul Naylor, Tom Peschak and Andrew Sutton.
Another thoughtful feature is an accessory shoe mounted above the pentaprism. This lets you fit a focusing light to your EOS 5D to help with locating your subject and to make it easier for your autofocus to lock on or for you to focus sharply by eye. By mounting your focusing light high above the port and by using a ball joint, it's easy to aim your focusing light at your subject whether shooting extreme wide angle or ultra macro. Our dive shop, Mavericks, can supply a choice of suitable lights including the Aquatec LED torch that has deservedly become a real hit with SLR photographers.
The Nexus grips are sculpted for secure, comfortable handling. They are integrated into the overall design to place your fingertips within easy reach of key shooting controls to keep your EOS 5D responsive and fast to operate. Spacers enable the handles to be moved outwards, allowing the grips to be positioned to suit the size of your hands and length of your fingers for the best overall handling. The left grip can also be moved forward to help you comfortably counterbalance long lenses or heavier strobes that can pitch your housing nose down.
The Nexus EOS 5D Multifinder is a professional level housing that offers superb design qualities, excellent workmanship and entry to an extremely comprehensive range of accessories for a remarkably low investment. Please call Steve or Mark for an appointment if you would like to visit and discuss the Nexus EOS 5D housing system in detail. We recommend putting aside at least an hour for a first visit. This should be no more than a visit to view. If you do later choose to invest in any SLR housing from Ocean Optics, we would recommend returning for at least half a day with your camera system. Either Mark or Steve will then work one on one with you to ensure you are entirely comfortable with setting up your system, are familiar with testing strobe connections and have been talked through the procedures you must observe to keep your housing watertight.
