An introduction to Nexus housings
DSLR
Nexus produce highly acclaimed housings that are used by many professional underwater photographers. They are the housings chosen by the Scuba Zoo team, whose shows you will have seen on television, David Doubilet, famed for his National Geographic Magazine portfolios and Pinewood Studio’s Pheobe Rudomino - Dusiacka whose work at the wet tank includes shooting stills for Basic Instinct 2, Fight Club and Casino Royale.
Toshikazu Kozawa is the man behind Nexus. An underwater photographer for more than twenty five years, Toshi founded Nexus in 1991. His design expertise shines through in housings that are supremely compact, have excellent control layouts and are built for a hard working life. Toshi supports his housing line with an incredibly extensive line of ports and port accessories that covers even the most extreme wide angle and supermacro photographers requirements.
Even more remarkable is that Toshi continues to offer Nexus housings and accessories at a price we would consider to be well below their real market value. This means that these entirely professional housings are very affordable indeed. Naturally, we have full back up in place through PR Productions, under the auspices of our founder Peter Rowlands.
If you would like to view the Nexus range, then please call us here at Ocean Optics to arrange an appointment. Typically, you’ll want to set one to two hours aside to discuss the Nexus system in detail. We do not encourage clients to buy any make of SLR housing on a first visit. If you do decide to buy from us, then we would like to get you back for half a day when either Steve or Mark will work one on one with you. During this time we’ll show you how to assemble your system, check strobe functions and take you through the all important procedures for keeping the ocean out of your housing.
New Viewfinder Included With Nexus Housings
Ocean Optics is supplying Nexus D200 and D80 housings with a newly developed Inon viewfinder. The Inon viewfinder offers underwater photographers four important benefits. Firstly, this viewfinder is a genuine magnifier, providing an enlarged image of the cameras own focusing screen. So it is easier to compose your picture, focus manually by eye and read your viewfinder information displays. Many housings have image reduction viewfinders fitted, which make the image smaller and can impair your view of the all important focusing screen and information displays.
Secondly, the Inon viewfinder supplied by Ocean Optics places the eyepiece at 45 degrees. This slanted position is perfect for taking pictures while swimming, lying prone on the seabed or trying to shoot from low angles. It’s also very helpful for composing split-level shots at which Nexus housings excel as you can dip the camera while keeping the finder above the waterline.
Thirdly, the Inon viewfinder swivels. This lets you shoot easily in portrait mode without having to assume near impossible positions yourself in order to look through the finder. So this right angle finder is really user friendly compared to a fixed finder.
Finally, the Inon viewfinder is easily removed from your Nexus housing for travelling, It’s sealed by two piston O rings for reliability, but can be detached in seconds without tools. This keeps your already ultra compact Nexus housing exactly that – ultra compact.
The best makes to use with the Inon viewfinder are low volume models with a black skirt. These features make it easier to see all of the screen and information displays and improves contrast. Mavericks, our dive shop, carries a selection of suitable face masks. We can also install prescription lenses if you need them.
