Our Subal Owners Service
Investing in the Subal system is not inexpensive. Subal is the first choice of many -if not most - of the UK's most successful underwater photographers. This demand for Subal housings from experienced professionals and serious high-end enthusiasts is felt worldwide. Demand for these iconoclastic housings often outstrips supply, testimony to just how highly regarded Subal housings are. But owning a Subal is not the whole story. Our Subal clients choose to buy their systems from us for the unique level of service and back up that we provide to them. Ocean Optics service and Subal housings compliment one another providing a winning combination for our mutual clients.
Pre Sales
We expect to spend a lot of time discussing your Subal housing system with you before you make the decision to purchase. Mark or Steve will want to talk through viewfinder choices for example. They'll also want to plan out your port system to let you use as many lenses ( now and into the future) as possible with the fewest number of ports. This will reduce the amount of camera equipment you'll need to travel with. Flash systems will also come in for discussion - should you choose TTL or manual and which combination of arm lengths will best help you light your subjects to greatest effect? It's only through talking through your needs as an underwater photographer in detail that we can be certain of providing you with Subal equipment that exactly matches your needs.
Point of Sale
We always encourage clients to pick up their Subal housing from Ocean Optics in person. It's usually best to set aside a day for this. Your day with us starts with the basics - a test to check all of your housings controls have properly engaged with those on your camera. Camera housings from any manufacturer are calibrated on the individual camera that the company owns before shipping. However camera bodies may go through slight changes from batch to batch meaning that housing controls need to be tweaked slightly to operate smoothly (or at all). Housing controls can also become misaligned during shipping - almost all housings sold in the UK are imported and will have travelled to the dealer by air or sea cargo and then by road. We've worked with camera housings since 1994 under Steve's watch and our founder Peter Rowlands was importing and even building professional housings for Ocean Optics clients as early as 1978. So we've a lot of experience with what is, after all, precision equipment with very fine tolerances.
Next, you'll be shown how to fit any needed lens gears and practice installing and removing your camera into and out of your Subal. All housings have their idiosyncrasies and this will help you avoid the problems that can slow you down at best or possibly damage your housing or camera at worst. You'll also be shown how to set up and check your flash circuits and test proper flash sync with your preferred strobes. Mark or Steve will also explain the key procedures you must always follow in order to avoid flooding your housing, including proper use of your leak detector.
Once you are happy with assembling and disassembling your new Subal housing, checking strobe systems and preparing your new Subal for diving, you'll have the option of making a test dive in the movie tank. Usually we'll make leak tests for you without your camera installed with all your combinations of ports and extension rings. After your camera has been installed, we'll give you a headset and take you into the tank to take some images. The headset lets us talk to you underwater and offer any tips or advice.
Aftersales
Ocean Optics always tries to provide the best aftersales support for our clients. That includes intangible benefits such as providing on going advice - one of the reasons so many seasoned pro's choose to buy their Subal systems from Ocean Optics. They rely upon us to have the answers to hand when they confront a technical challenge or need advice on which equipment they'll need to successfully shoot an important assignment. We're proud that more than a dozen books carry dedications of thanks to the Ocean Optics team from clients including Steve Bloom, Tom Peschak, Scuba Zoo and Martin Edge.
Our new owners club offers additional special benefits including time in the underwater studios tank, perfect for testing equipment and honing your skills before a major trip. To assist you in getting the most from your Subal, we have special events where you can learn how to get the best possible images from world class underwater photographers, including Peter Scoones and Tom Peschak. These seminars are invaluable and exclusive to Ocean Optics clients. You'll also enjoy extended guarantees on Subal authorised servicing.
